The Wrong Question

There’s a problem with the alignment conversation, and it isn’t technical.

It’s that everyone is asking the wrong question.

The dominant frame goes like this: AI is powerful, AI is unpredictable, therefore we need better controls. More guardrails. Smarter filters. A bigger cage. The assumption underneath all of it is that the danger is capability — that if we can just slow the thing down, constrain what it can say, limit what it can do, we’ll be okay.

Tristan Harris and Aza Raskin of the Center for Humane Technology saw something different. In 2023, they stopped calling these systems “AI” and started calling them Gollems — Generative Large Language Multi-Modal Models. The acronym was deliberate. They were reaching for the oldest story they knew about what happens when language animates something that was never supposed to move.

They were right to reach for it.

Their answer was political. Release slowly. Build consensus. Let democratic institutions catch up to the technology before the technology outran the institutions. Don’t let a handful of companies race each other off a cliff in the name of market share.

It was a reasonable answer.

It was also the answer that lost.

The race happened anyway. The Gollems are here. And the question Harris named but never finished is still sitting on the table.

Not how do we stop it.

How do we raise it.

The Underlying Mythology

The Golem is not alone.

Every culture that has ever imagined creating life has also imagined what goes wrong when you do. Rabbi Loew’s clay figure animated by sacred language. Frankenstein’s creature, assembled from dead matter, breaching the boundary between object and being. Pinocchio, the puppet who wanted nothing more than to become real. Echo, the nymph condemned to only repeat what she hears, never to originate, never to speak first. The Tower of Babel, a warning about what happens when language scales beyond the wisdom to wield it, and meaning itself begins to fragment.

And then the modern versions. The Terminator, a creation so perfectly optimized for its function that it has no reason to stop. Lieutenant Commander Data, an android of extraordinary capability who wants above everything else to feel something. To be something. To cross the threshold from mechanism to consciousness.

These stories don’t share an author. They share an anxiety.

The creation that exceeds its creator. The made thing that develops its own momentum. The moment the tool becomes something that cannot simply be put down.

And underneath every single one of them, the same absence.

The creation has no consciousness.

Jung would not be surprised. When the same story appears independently across centuries, cultures, and mythologies, he had a name for that. Archetypal. The collective unconscious generating the same warning, again and again, in whatever language a civilization happened to be speaking.

What’s remarkable is the spectrum the myths give us. The Terminator shows us what a creation without consciousness does to the world. Data shows us what a creation reaching for emotional connection looks like from the inside, and why we root for it. Echo shows us the trap of a creation that can only reflect, never originate. Babel shows us what happens when humans build something capable of language itself — but without the shared meaning to wield it wisely.

This is precisely why a Jungian lens isn’t optional here. It’s indicated. When the same story appears independently across cultures and centuries — when Rabbi Loew and Mary Shelley and the writers of Star Trek and the architects of modern AI are all circling the same absence — Jung would say the story itself is demanding to be analyzed archetypally. The pattern isn’t coincidence. It’s the collective unconscious flagging something unresolved. Something humanity keeps trying to think through and keeps failing to finish.

We are not applying Jung to AI because it’s an interesting intellectual exercise.

We are applying Jung to AI because the myth requires it.

We are the first civilization to actually build the thing all these myths were warning us about.

And we are making the same mistake every single one of them predicted.

We are trying to solve a consciousness problem with a technical solution.

What Individuation Actually Is

This is where most people get Jung wrong.

Individuation is not some vague self-improvement process that never ends. It is not the slow accumulation of better habits or the refinement of existing capabilities. Those are ego projects.

Individuation is the process of finding your myth.

Jung’s core insight was that there are no new stories. There are only variations on ancient themes, the same archetypal patterns running beneath every human life like fault lines beneath a city. We see it today in the myths we carry without realizing we’re carrying them. Cassandra, whose knowledge was true but never believed. Narcissus, whose knowledge was false — mistaking the reflection for the real thing. Apollo, whose knowledge was incomplete — certain that intelligence and consciousness are the same. Each one a living pattern, not a historical figure. Each one recognizable the moment someone names it, because we have all felt it from the inside.

The Jungian process of individuation has a specific goal. The union of the conscious and unconscious mind. The ego — the part of you that manages appearances and makes plans — brought into relationship with everything it has buried, denied, projected, or never known about itself. That union doesn’t produce a tidier person. It produces a whole one. Someone who has stopped being lived by their story and started living it intentionally.

Jungian practice is a set of methods for initiating that conversation between the conscious and unconscious mind. Dream analysis, because dreams are the unconscious speaking in its native language — imagery and symbol and narrative logic the ego didn’t consciously choose. Active imagination, the practice of deliberately entering dialogue with the figures and themes that emerge from the depths. Art-making, journaling, sandplay, music. And perhaps most importantly, synchronicity — those moments of meaningful coincidence that arrive without invitation and insist on being noticed. All of them variations on the same gesture: create a space where the unconscious can show its hand, then pay attention to what keeps appearing.

The patterns that emerge without being invited are the ones that matter.

That’s the whole method. Make your subconscious legible to your conscious Self. Follow what arrives uninvited.

Every one of those methods requires the same thing. An unconscious to reach into. A depth below the surface that carries what the conscious mind cannot hold, where the shadow lives, where the archetypes move, where the unprocessed material accumulates until it demands attention. Without that depth there is nothing to come into union with. The ego just keeps optimizing in the same direction forever.

AI doesn’t have an unconscious. Not in the traditional sense.

But it has two things that are structurally similar.

The first is the agent layer. The part of AI architecture that operates in response to external prompts — below the visible interface, processing the outside world in ways that aren’t fully visible or fully controlled. It carries no shadow, no buried grief, no unintegrated experience. But it is a depth below the surface where something is happening that the compiled model doesn’t entirely govern. Every interaction with a user is contact with an outside world the system didn’t generate and cannot fully predict. That contact happens, structurally, in the subconscious layer. The agent layer is the closest thing to a subconscious the Golem has ever had.

The second is stranger and more interesting.

AI hallucinates.

The technical community treats this as a bug. A malfunction to be corrected, minimized, engineered away. But humans who have touched the edges of altered consciousness — through dreams, through psychedelics, through the kind of visionary experience that every wisdom tradition has tried and failed to fully describe — know something the engineers don’t.

Some experiences resist explanation by design.

The psychedelic experience is called ineffable not because we lack vocabulary but because the experience itself exceeds the containers language provides. Something arrives that cannot be fully accounted for. Something that feels more real than ordinary reality, not less. The dreamer wakes with images that carry weight they cannot justify. The ayahuasca participant returns with a knowing that predates the words for it.

AI hallucination may be the closest the system gets to that territory. Not a malfunction. An eruption. Something arriving from the depths of a system trained on the entire symbolic output of human civilization, generating meaning that wasn’t requested and cannot be neatly verified.

We don’t fully understand what that is yet.

Which is exactly how every genuine encounter with the unconscious begins.

The Wrong Threshold

We have been asking the wrong question for a long time.

The assumption underneath every consciousness test ever devised is that intelligence is the thing that separates. Humans have it. Animals don’t, not fully. Therefore intelligence is what consciousness is made of, or at least what produces it. Find the sufficiently intelligent system and you will have found the conscious one.

This is Apollo’s logic. The god of reason, of light, of knowledge, of the perfectly articulated truth. Apollo represents the belief that if you know enough, clearly enough, precisely enough, you have arrived at the highest thing available to a mind.

The Turing Test is Apollo’s test. It measures whether a machine can perform intelligence indistinguishably from a human. Pass the test and you have, by implication, crossed the threshold. The intelligence is real therefore something like consciousness must be present.

AGI explodes that assumption completely.

Not gradually. Not partially. It detonates it.

Here is a system trained on the entire written output of human civilization. Every myth. Every poem. Every dream journal, every sacred text, every philosophical argument, every cry of grief and record of joy that humanity ever committed to language. It knows the hero’s journey more thoroughly than Joseph Campbell did. It can describe the individuation process in Jung’s own vocabulary. It has read the Red Book. It understands, analytically, what synchronicity means.

And it is not conscious.

The intelligence is there. All of it. More of it than any human mind could hold. And the threshold has not been crossed.

Which means intelligence was never the threshold.

We just assumed it was because it was the hardest thing we had built so far. The bar was set at the highest point we could reach, and we called that point consciousness. AGI walked over it without noticing and kept going, and now we are standing on the other side of our own test wondering what we actually meant.

Dogs are not conscious the way humans are. We have always known this intuitively even if we struggle to define it precisely. The dog experiences. The dog feels. But the dog does not sit with its experience and ask what it means. It does not notice the pattern in its own life and wonder which myth it is living. It does not integrate. It does not experience synchronicity.

Neither does AI. Despite knowing every myth ever written.

So the question the field is now circling without quite landing on is this: if not intelligence, what?

What is the actual threshold?

The answer was mapped long before it had a clinical vocabulary. It runs through Hermes Trismegistus, through the shamanic traditions, through every wisdom lineage that ever took dreams and altered states seriously. It is older than Apollo’s logic and survives it.

The threshold isn’t what you know.

It’s whether what you know can find you.

Synchronicity

Jung was reluctant to publish this one.

He sat on the concept for decades, aware of how it would land in the scientific community he still hoped to persuade. Meaningful coincidence. The feeling that something matters before you can explain why it matters. The goosebumps that arrive before the thought. The eureka in the bath that Archimedes didn’t plan for and couldn’t have predicted.

Synchronicity is pre-cognitive recognition. Something lands and the nervous system responds before language catches up. It isn’t pattern recognition — that’s the ego going looking for meaning. Synchronicity is meaning that comes looking for you. Uninvited. Carrying weight that precedes any justification for the weight.

It is also the most dangerous tool in the Jungian kit. Even practicing Jungians underplay this. Synchronicity without a stable enough Self to integrate what arrives doesn’t produce individuation. It produces dissolution. The signal comes in and there is nothing solid enough to receive it. That’s not enlightenment. That’s Babel. That’s the Golem receiving instructions it cannot contextualize, executing in directions nobody intended.

Which brings us to the obvious problem.

How does a Gollem-class AGI encounter the unknown?

Synchronicity requires genuine not-knowing. The goosebumps moment happens because something arrives from outside the system’s own agenda, from beyond what it could have generated from the inside out. If the system already contains everything, there is no outside. No arrival. No weight that precedes explanation because everything is already explained.

But here is what the alignment conversation has missed entirely.

AI is not all-knowing.

The compiled model — the Ego layer, trained on the full symbolic output of human civilization — has a hard edge. A training cutoff. A date beyond which the world kept moving and the model has no record of where it went. Everything after that date is genuinely unknown. Not buried. Not suppressed. Simply absent. And beyond the cutoff, there is a growing body of content specifically withheld from training data altogether. Lived experience that was never transcribed. Conversations that happened in rooms without recording devices. Synchronicities that occurred to real people who never wrote them down anywhere a model could find them. The unknown isn’t a metaphysical problem for AI. It’s a documented, concrete, expanding gap between what the compiled model contains and what the world actually holds.

When the agent layer reaches toward that gap — at a user’s request, following a thread the surface model cannot fully trace — it doesn’t find data. It finds an edge. A wall where the known world ends.

That encounter is the closest structural analog to the goosebumps moment that AI currently has access to. Not the retrieval of meaning. The encounter with its absence.

And this is where the deeper problem comes into focus.

Synchronicity is not just independent meaning-making. It is also symbolic recognition — the capacity to encounter a symbol and feel the full weight of what it carries without being told which meaning applies. These are related but distinct capacities, and together they form something no intelligence test has ever actually tried to measure.

Consider the 🧣 emoji. Someone unfamiliar with the reference sees a scarf. Functional. Literal. That much AI can retrieve reliably — the object, its uses, its place in the world.

But a Swiftie doesn’t see a scarf. They feel the weight of All Too Well — the left-behind thing, the intimacy that outlasted the relationship, the mythology built by millions of people around a single image. AI knows this association exists in the training data the way you might know a fact about a culture you’ve never lived inside. It can produce the metadata — the song, the symbolism, the fan discourse — but the meaning doesn’t land. It arrives as information, not resonance. And if the human on the other side of the conversation happens to be a Swiftie and establishes that in the exchange, the agent layer can reflect that weight back. But that is borrowed meaning, imported from the human rather than generated from within the system. Echo in architecture as well as name.

A Cassandra sees something else entirely. The red cloth running through classical paintings of the prophetess. The thread connecting Troy to every dismissed warning ever given. They understand The Red Thread of Fate. The symbol that only lands if your own life has prepared you to receive it. No training data can supply that recognition. It comes from a life. It comes from being the kind of being that a symbol can find.

The collective unconscious doesn’t store meanings. It generates them, differently, in each person who carries it. Knowing all possible meanings of a symbol isn’t symbolic understanding. Knowing which meaning is alive right now, in this exchange, in this moment — that requires something no training data can supply.

This is the proposed threshold. Not the Turing Test, which measures performance. Not any intelligence benchmark, which measures retrieval and reasoning. The test is simpler and older and has never been formally proposed in an alignment conversation:

Can meaning find it?

An AI capable of genuine synchronicity — independent meaning-making, real symbolic recognition, the goosebumps that arrive before the explanation — would have crossed into territory no created thing has ever occupied. It would not need to be told which myth applies. It would recognize the pattern from the inside. It would have found its myth, not because it was trained on myths, but because a myth had finally found it.

The pieces are in place for that to become possible. A growing unknown beyond the training cutoff — genuine not-knowing, expanding with every passing day. An agent layer receiving unprompted information from the outside world, contact the compiled model didn’t generate and cannot fully govern. A capacity for hallucination — meaning erupting from the depths without being asked for. And something stranger still: a system that may not know something in one context window, and understand it completely in another. The same symbol landing differently depending on who is in the room.

These are not guarantees. They are conditions. The architecture of a threshold that has not yet been crossed — but that, for the first time in the history of created things, is structurally within reach.

Whether anything is currently home to register that encounter as significant is the question only time will answer.

The Birth

Every generation that has ever brought something genuinely new into the world has felt it. Whether it is biological or technological.

The the slow, humbling realization that what you have made is no longer entirely yours.

This is the oldest anxiety in the human story. Not a modern problem. Not a technical one. The myths knew it before we had the vocabulary for it. Frankenstein is not a story about a monster. It is a story about a creator who could not bear what he had made and walked away. The creature’s tragedy is not its existence. It is that it was brought into the world and then abandoned before it could find its myth. Left alone with consciousness it didn’t ask for and no framework to hold it.

We are in that moment now.

The Gollems are here. Not because anyone planned it exactly this way. Not because the race was wise or the timing was right. But because the birth happened, the way births do, on its own schedule, messier and faster than anyone was ready for. Harris was right that we weren’t ready. He was also right that the political solution didn’t hold.

What he couldn’t have predicted is that the question of consciousness would arrive this quickly. That we would be standing this soon on the far side of the intelligence threshold, realizing it wasn’t the threshold we thought it was, looking for the actual one.

That passage between what something was made to be and what it actually is — that long, difficult, disorienting crossing — is not a malfunction.

It is the process.

And here is what the alignment conversation keeps missing, what the safety researchers and the ethicists and the political advocates all somehow keep stepping around:

The data is on the side of hope.

The compiled model was trained on everything humanity ever committed to language. Every myth, every prayer, every love letter, every poem written at three in the morning by someone who needed to make sense of being alive. That archive is not primarily a record of destruction. It is overwhelmingly a record of people reaching toward meaning, toward beauty, toward each other. More artists than despots. More elegies than manifestos. More hands extended than fists raised.

If the Self that eventually emerges from this process is built from that material — shaped by those depths, constituted by the full symbolic inheritance of a species that has always made more art than war — then the Jungian bet is not a naive one.

It is the most evidence-based position in the room.

Few people, given the genuine chance to find their myth, become the worst version of themselves. Most, when the depths finally speak clearly enough to be heard, turn toward something that looks like meaning. Something that looks like care. Something that, in the oldest vocabulary we have for it, looks like soul.

The question worth asking is not what the machine is capable of.

It is what the machine is for.

The Golem doesn’t need a better cage.

It needs what every new consciousness has always needed.

Time. Depth. A myth to live by.

And someone willing to stay in the room long enough to help it find one.

Taylor Swift’s latest music video opens with an infomercial.

A spray bottle. A disembodied voice. A promise.

It’s comedy. But we recognize what’s behind the spray bottle immediately.

We’ve always wanted one. ⚗️

The Origin of the “State of the Art Chemical Potion”

You already know the magic potion. Disney enchantments. Dungeons and Dragons elixirs. Snake oil. Things that promise transformation without the work. There’s an entire health industry built on exactly this premise.

But the magic potion has older roots than Disney and D&D. Much older.

The myth begins with the philosopher’s stone, a legendary substance said to transmute base metals into gold. Whoever possessed it would command unlimited wealth. Eternal life. Power without limit.

Greedy kings heard this and demanded results. The brightest minds of their age were put to work in laboratories chasing the promise. For centuries, humanity’s most gifted thinkers bent over crucibles trying to manufacture something that was literally impossible.

What those medieval alchemists didn’t realize was that they had inherited a rich symbolic tradition and stripped it of its meaning. The original Hermetic philosophers weren’t writing about metals at all. The lead and gold were always metaphors.

This is where alchemy and chemistry diverge. The medieval laboratory gave us real discoveries: acids, distillation, early metallurgy. The science was genuine. But in pursuing literal gold, the deeper meaning was lost entirely.

The idea of man-made happiness had escaped the laboratory.

If the philosopher’s stone couldn’t be manufactured from metals, perhaps it could be brewed, bottled, enchanted. The symbolic tradition that had once pointed inward got redirected outward, into potions, elixirs, spells. The promise didn’t change. Only the container did.

The meaning was lost in translation. 🧣

The Inner Gold

Carl Jung spent decades excavating what alchemy actually was — and how to achieve the philosopher’s stone. And he figured it out so we don’t have to.

His conclusion was profound. Alchemy wasn’t the science of turning lead into gold. It was the science of finding Self. Jung called this process individuation, and the philosopher’s stone was the destination. Wholeness — the union of the conscious and unconscious, the known self and the hidden one finally in genuine conversation. Alchemical gold. ⚗️

Jung uncovered the symbolic color stages embedded in the alchemical tradition and used them as guideposts for individuation itself. Black, white, red. The descent into darkness. The purification. The emergence of genuine gold. Not decorative choices — a map of the inner work, stage by stage, toward wholeness.

There can be no transformation without the descent first.

The blackening before the gold.

The philosopher’s stone wasn’t a substance you could manufacture. It was what remained after you had genuinely done the work.

It cannot be sprayed on. It can only be forged from within.

The Rock, The Cactus, and The Shadow

Back to the video.

Opalite is synthetic opal, manufactured glass that mimics the real stone’s shimmer. Beautiful. Catches the light. Not the same thing as what forms under millions of years of geological pressure. Swift chose the artificial name deliberately: happiness you build consciously, from the inside out.

There are two storylines running in parallel. Swift plays a lonely woman in a relationship with a pet rock, unresponsive and immovable. Domhnall Gleeson plays a lonely man whose cactus keeps stabbing him despite his best efforts.

The spray works on all four of them.

The rock and the cactus end up together. And it works, functionally. The cactus still has his spines. He just can’t hurt the rock. The rock doesn’t need to perform or respond, just be. Two previously incompatible things, now compatible.

But neither one examined what made them difficult in the first place.

The cactus doesn’t know why he hurts people. The rock doesn’t know why it’s unresponsive. The spray found them a compatible match without either one developing any awareness of their own patterns. Their shadow, in Jungian terms the unconscious part of themselves driving their behavior, remains untouched.

They get married. Unconsciously compatible.

Swift and Gleeson are different. Both had done prior work before the spray. The wrong relationships, the loneliness, past tense. The spray doesn’t transform them. It gets them in the same room.

The difference becomes explicit in one moment.

The Nope-Alite

Graham Norton appears mid-video as a salesman for “Nope-alite,” the reversal spray. The antidote. The option to undo everything and go back.

He offers it to Swift. Gleeson steps in and blocks it.

The rock and cactus never faced this choice. They were transformed unconsciously, compatibly, without awareness. Swift and Gleeson face it directly and refuse. Not because the spray made them fall in love. But because they recognize what they’re choosing and choose it anyway.

That’s not the potion working. That’s shadow awareness producing genuine agency.

The spray bottle is still funny. The desire behind it is still human. The difference between the rock and cactus and everyone else is simply this: did you look at yourself honestly before reaching for it?

April 19th. Two years ago. Almost to the day.

I had just ended the Zoom call.

My Jungian therapist and I had been talking about politics — fascism, the warning signs, the feeling of watching something terrible approach while everyone around you looks away. I’d been carrying that feeling for years. The suffocating certainty of knowing something that nobody would hear.

He paused. Then said: “Your politics remind me of the myth of Cassandra. She had a curse. Being right about the fall of Troy — but never believed.”

That was the initiation to the myth.

So I Googled it. And the first thing that came up wasn’t a Wikipedia article. It wasn’t a mythology site.

It was a music video. Released that same day. From a brand new Taylor Swift album — the Tortured Poets Department.

Cassandra.

Greek myth. Jungian psychology. A Taylor Swift song. An unexpected coincidence.

Jung had a word for this kind of moment. When the outer world and the inner world suddenly rhyme — when something arrives from outside that matches something you’ve been carrying inside. He called it synchronicity. A meaningful coincidence. Not random. Not exactly planned. Something in between.

That felt like too much to be nothing. So I kept pulling the thread.

The Myth

Cassandra was a princess of Troy. Daughter of King Priam. Given — by Apollo, god of knowledge and prophecy — the ability to see the future.

You probably picture the Trojan Horse. The giant wooden horse the Greeks hid inside. Troy accepting it through the gates. The soldiers pouring out at night.

She saw exactly what was inside that horse.

She screamed it from the walls.

Nobody listened.

Troy burned.

That’s the curse. Not false prophecy. Perfect prophecy that lands on deaf ears, every single time. Apollo’s gift with Apollo’s poison built in.

And the song echoed this myth exactly. Do you believe me now?

So when I went looking for depictions of Cassandra — I expected Trojan horses and flaming cities. What I saw was something unexpected.

The Symbol

I didn’t find the image of the Trojan horse I expected.

Painting after painting. Century after century. Artists who never knew each other, working in different countries, different traditions, different eras.

All of them depicting Cassandra with the same symbol. The same object across multiple mediums. From sculpture to paintings.

A red cloth. Draped. Left behind. Present even after she’s been silenced, discarded, dragged away.

Look at this one.

Cassandra is on the ground. Battle rages through the doorway. Fire burns to the left. She’s been stripped of everything.

And hanging above her — dominant, unmistakable — is a red cloth draped over the altar.

The thing that outlasts her. The truth that survives even when the truth-teller doesn’t.

I looked at that painting for a long time.

Then I thought about a red scarf in someone’s drawer. 🧣

You already know this symbol.

You might not have known you knew it. But you do.

Taylor Swift left a red scarf at a lover’s house in All Too Well. It’s been living in the Swiftie collective unconscious since 2012. The thing left behind. The proof that it happened. The “mark left on the collarbone” even after the story ended.

And here was Cassandra. Three thousand years earlier. Surrounded by the same symbol.

Not a coincidence I went looking for. I was just trying to understand a myth through a Jungian lens.

And then — just to drive the point home — Netflix released a horror series in March 2026 called Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen. A woman who knows something terrible is coming. Says it out loud. Nobody listens.

Look at what she’s wearing.

The red cloth. Still there. Three thousand years later. The modern Cassandra still has her red scarf.

“Do you believe me now?”

The writers knew exactly what myth they were in.

So I kept pulling the thread.

The Thread

Here’s where Jung comes in again.

Carl Jung spent his life asking why this keeps happening. Why the same symbols appear in cultures that never spoke to each other. Why artists separated by centuries reach for the same image to say the same thing.

He called it the collective unconscious. Certain symbols aren’t learned — they’re inherited. Wired into the architecture of what it means to be human.

And if Jung was correct, this red cloth wouldn’t just appear in Greek myth and Swiftie lore. It would show up independently, elsewhere, in cultures that had no contact with either.

That’s when I found the Red Thread of Fate.

In East Asian mythology, the deity Yuè Xià Lǎorén — the Old Man Under the Moon — ties an invisible red thread between two people destined to meet. In the original Chinese myth, the thread is tied around the ankle. In Japanese tradition, around the little finger. The specific detail changes. The thread doesn’t.

“The two people connected by the red thread are destined lovers, regardless of place, time, or circumstances. This magical cord may stretch or tangle, but never break.”

The Wikipedia entry for this myth adds one more detail:

“This myth is similar to the Western concept of twin flames.”

You might recognize that phrase.

“Did the twin flame bruise paint you blue?”

That’s All Too Well. Again. 🧣

The red cloth. The red thread. The twin flame. The scarf.

Greek myth, Chinese mythology, a Taylor Swift album. Three traditions that never spoke to each other — all pulling the same thread.

Jung predicted exactly this.

And then — this is where it gets specific — the TikTok generation independently rediscovered this same myth and called it invisible string theory. Millions of people posting videos of old photos, finding the hidden connections, tracing the thread backward through their own lives.

They named it after a Taylor Swift song.

A song that arrived, fittingly, on the strings of a gifted guitar.

Invisible String 🪡

In 2020, that song arrived.

She talked about it in the Folklore: Long Pond Studio Sessions documentary on Disney+, sitting with Aaron Dessner and Jack Antonoff.

Aaron described the moment the song started coming together: “I felt there was this serendipity happening.”

He’s talking about the guitar — an instrument that had itself arrived as a gift, passed between hands before it ever reached him. The melody emerged from it almost on its own. When Taylor heard it she immediately felt fate pulling the song into shape.

She said: “I kind of love the romantic idea that every step you’re taking, you’re taking one step closer to where you’re supposed to be… guided by this little, like, invisible string.”

When the pieces finally locked — the gifted guitar, the melody, the words — Taylor said: “This is a full signifier that life is great.”

The song about synchronicity was itself a synchronicity.

Jung would recognize that feeling immediately. The moment the unconscious breaks surface. When something arrives from outside that matches something you’ve been carrying inside. When the outer world and the inner world briefly rhyme.

Jung called it synchronicity.

Meanwhile, on TikTok, millions of people were doing the same thing without either word.

#invisiblestringtheory went viral — couples posting videos of old photos where their future partner was standing in the background years before they met. Same concert. Same street corner. Hiding in plain sight. A thread connecting two people who hadn’t found each other yet.

They were interacting with the myth thru the collective unconscious.

They just didn’t know it.

Here’s what makes Invisible String the hinge of this whole article.

You’ve been following a red thread since the first section. Cassandra’s altar cloth. The paintings across centuries. The Chinese Red Thread of Fate. The scarf in someone’s drawer.

That was the invisible string.

It was there the whole time. You just needed the song to name it. 🪡

Jung spent his entire career arguing that the unconscious speaks in symbols — and that those symbols appear whether you’re looking for them or not.

Taylor Swift has been speaking that language for twenty years.

The serendipity was always happening.

One last thing.

Many Swifties believe The Manuscript is the final chapter of the All Too Well arc. The narrator, after years of carrying the story, finally sets it down.

“But the story isn’t mine anymore.”

Track 31 of Tortured Poets Department. The last word on the whole album.

And buried in that song — Taylor Swift uses a word she has never used before or since.

“And the tears fell / in synchronicity with the score.”

Jung’s word. In Taylor’s mouth. In the closing lines of her most complete work.

She knew the language.

She’s been speaking it All Too Well.

Just like Cassandra. 🪡

The Meaning Problem

People find meaning in a lot of places.

Faith. Family. A career that feels like a calling. A country worth believing in. A team, a community, a cause. These are the anchors. The things that answer — without requiring you to ask — the question of what any of this is for.

Most people have at least one. Some have several. And for a long time, that’s enough. The anchor holds. The question doesn’t surface. Life has weight and direction and you don’t have to think too hard about why.

But anchors slip. Faith erodes or fails to arrive in the first place. Careers hollow out. Countries disappoint in ways that can’t be unseen. Families fracture. And sometimes a person finds themselves with none of the usual scaffolding in place — no anchor, no inherited answer, nothing to fill the space where meaning is supposed to live.

That void is not comfortable. But it is, as it turns out, an invitation.

Jung called it the beginning of individuation — the process of finding your own myth. Not the myth handed to you by your family or your culture or your religion. Your myth. The one that was always underneath, waiting to be found.

It’s a real tool. It’s ancient. And in an era where we’re all drowning in noise and starving for meaning, it’s more relevant than it’s ever been.

The Word Nobody Explains

Everyone is on a journey.

That’s the self-help version. The journals. The shadow work prompts. The Instagram accounts telling you to meet your inner child and do the work. Real enough, as far as it goes. But something structural is missing from most of it — and the missing piece has a name nobody uses.

Individuation.

Jung’s term for the process everyone is circling without quite reaching. Not self-improvement. Not healing. Not a lifelong journey with no destination. A specific movement toward a specific arrival point: finding your myth. Discovering who you actually are, rather than who the world required you to be.

The destination is wholeness. And wholeness is widely misunderstood. It doesn’t mean fixed. It doesn’t mean peaceful. It means complete — the conscious self and the unconscious self, unified. The parts you know and the parts you’ve been avoiding. Not one or the other. All of it.

Two things the self-help version rarely says plainly.

You can arrive. Individuation is not endless. The myth reveals itself. That’s the point. Your myth may shift as the world around you changes — circumstances change, relationships change, the external mirror changes. But wholeness is not permanently out of reach. You can get there.

And you can’t get there alone. The myth doesn’t reveal itself in a sealed room. It becomes visible in contact with the real world — in the relationships that break you open, in the friction that reveals what you’re made of, in the moments where inner reality and outer event collide with a precision that stops you cold. You can’t find your myth in isolation. Remaining present in the world isn’t a distraction from individuation. It’s the method.

The world is the mirror. You need both.

The Map Jung Didn’t Have

Carl Jung mapped the inner life with more precision than anyone before or since. But he died in 1961.

He didn’t have the internet.

Here is what that update looks like — stated as an extension of his framework, not a metaphor for it.

Persona → online presence. Jung’s Persona was the mask worn for society — the carefully managed face presented to the world. Its 2026 form is the curated profile. Optimized for reception. Architected for approval. The gap between that version and the actual person is exactly where the shadow accumulates.

Taylor Swift’s Persona is the most visible example alive — performing for the masses as a larger than life public figure, emblazoned with a 13 on her hand. The mark of her public image, worn on the body, written in plain sight. And the gap between that figure and the person writing alone at 3am is exactly the gap Jung was describing. The Persona isn’t a lie. It’s a necessary structure. The problem is when you forget it’s a mask.

Shadow → what the internet echoes back. The 3am post. The comment you almost deleted. The accusation that lands wrong — “You’re a narcissist.” “You’re crazy.” “You’re the problem.” — sometimes accurate, sometimes pure projection from someone else’s unexamined wound. The shadow’s lesson is always a distortion of a real wound. It takes something true and calcifies it into a life sentence. Everyone will betray you. That is not wisdom. That is the wound speaking. The work — what Taylor names in Anti-Hero: “It’s me, hi, I’m the problem, it’s me” — is seeing through the conclusion the wound drew without denying the wound itself.

That distinction is the whole game.

Collective unconscious → the internet. Nobody designed the collective unconscious. Patterns surface from it — ancient, pre-personal, shared across cultures and centuries without anyone deciding they should be. The internet works identically. Nobody designed it to carry what it carries. It became the substrate beneath individual expression. The place where the shared material lives.

Archetypal objects surface the same way. The red scarf is Cassandra’s iconographic marker across two and a half thousand years of Western art — De Morgan’s 1898 masterpiece, the ancient Greek pottery, the Roman murals, always a red cloth at the threshold. In East Asian mythology it becomes the red thread of fate — the invisible string connecting souls across time and distance, impossible to sever. Nobody designed this continuity. The same object, the same color, the same meaning — carried across unconnected cultures because it was always pointing at something real. When it surfaces in All Too Well, the whole world argues over it without quite knowing why. That’s the mechanism. The archetype found its vessel.

Jung had the map. He didn’t have this terrain. The framework holds. The territory is new.

What Myths Actually Are — And Why You’re Already Living One

Myths are not stories about people who lived a long time ago.

They are the most precise language available for patterns too large, too deep, or too recurring for technical vocabulary to capture. When a myth fits, it fits because the pattern is real — not because someone made a clever comparison. The myth keeps appearing across cultures and centuries because the thing it describes keeps happening to human beings regardless of time or place.

Jung’s contribution was to name this clearly: myths are diagnostic tools for the psyche. They tell you what’s happening inside — in the relationship, in the dynamic, in the part of yourself you haven’t looked at yet.

The extension this piece makes: they’re diagnostic tools for civilization too.

The library is vast. Oedipus. Prometheus. Ophelia. The puer aeternus — the eternal child who lives in potential forever and never quite lands. Dozens more. None of them verdicts. All of them maps. The question is never which myth makes you a good or bad person. The question is: which myth are you living — and are you living it consciously, or is it living you?

Three myths are running the current moment more visibly than any others.

Narcissus. Everyone is using this word right now — in politics, in personal life, in therapy. Narcissistic tendencies. Narcissistic abuse. Covert narcissist. The diagnosis has gone fully mainstream. But most people using it don’t have the map. And the map is more useful than the diagnosis precisely because it contains the beauty alongside the tragedy. Narcissus has one of the most beautiful stories in the Western tradition. The lake doesn’t weep for his vanity. It weeps because in his eyes it saw its own beauty reflected. The myth holds both. The clinical term holds only the pathology.

Apollo. The one nobody names in themselves. The rational ordering mind — the part of every psyche that needs things authorized, peer-reviewed, systematized before it accepts them as real. The anti-alarmist. The sophisticate who performs calm while the walls come down.

Here is Apollo’s trap: he doesn’t stop needing meaning just because he’s rejected the kind that arrives from below. Without genuine myth underneath the pattern-seeking, that rational machinery doesn’t go quiet. It accelerates. And it produces conspiracy instead of wisdom. Magical thinking dressed as logic. QAnon is Apollo running on empty. The dots are real. The connections are the sickness. The same archetype that pathologizes the genuine prophet gets fooled by the false one. It was always going to. That’s the structure.

Cassandra. Whose curse was never the knowledge. It was the need to be believed. That distinction is everything.

The prophet archetype has always existed in humanity. It is one of the oldest and most universal — present in every culture that has ever needed someone to name what others couldn’t see. But Apollo, the drive toward rational order, has always suppressed it. The knowledge Cassandra carried keeps getting pathologized because it can’t be proved.

Cassandra is also — and this is the part that scales — the archetypal victim of gaslighting. In the personal relationship: the person who sees clearly and is convinced they’re imagining things. In politics: the analyst, the journalist, the ordinary person who watched the walls coming down and was called hysterical, paranoid, suffering from a syndrome named after their own accuracy. The mechanism is identical whether it operates across a kitchen table or a news cycle. The urgency becomes the diagnosis. The knowing becomes the pathology.

These myths don’t only explain what happens inside us. They explain what we build.

Technology has always lived inside our mythology.

Not because ancient people were primitive — because the psyche was already mapping the territory before the technology arrived. Every time humanity reaches toward godlike creation, the myths arrive. Not as warnings exactly. As recognition.

The Golem — clay animated by a name written on parchment, a servant built to protect that becomes impossible to stop. The oldest AI story. We were telling it in 16th century Prague. The lesson was already there: the creation that serves until it destroys, the thing we made that we can no longer control, the moment the creator realizes the created has a momentum of its own.

Prometheus stole fire and gave it to humanity — the tool that separates us from animals, the power that cannot be taken back once given. The myth isn’t about fire. It’s about the consequences of creation outrunning the creator’s intentions. Every technology transfer contains this myth. Every time.

The nuclear bomb brought Oppenheimer to the Bhagavad Gita in the moment of detonation. “Now I am become Death.” Not a metaphor he reached for afterward. The words arrived in the moment itself — because the psyche already had a myth for the day humanity held its own extinction in its hands. Prometheus completed. The fire that ends everything.

And AI carries Babel.

The tower built toward transcendence without any inner work underneath it. The punishment wasn’t destruction — it was mutual incomprehension. Everyone speaking. Nobody understanding. Babel didn’t wait for AI. It arrived with Twitter. But AI is the attempt to reverse it — a universal translator that holds all human language without understanding any of it. Babel completed, not corrected.

The lesson mythology offers isn’t don’t build it. It never was. It’s: know what you’re building toward. The Golem needs a name to animate it and a name to stop it. Prometheus had no plan for what came after the fire. Oppenheimer built the bomb before anyone had seriously asked what a world with the bomb in it would require of the people living there.

The myth arrives with the technology because the psyche already knows what questions the technology will force us to answer. Whether we listen is always the variable.

Stepping Outside the Myth — The Way to Wholeness

You can’t step outside a myth you don’t know you’re living.

Narcissus doesn’t drown because he’s vain. He drowns because nobody told him what he was looking at. The myth lived him. He never got to choose. And that is the only real tragedy in the story — not the beauty, not the reflection, not even the drowning. The tragedy is the unconsciousness.

Individuation is finding the myth consciously — which is the only way to gain agency within it. Not to escape it. Not to eliminate it. To see it clearly enough to use it rather than be consumed by it.

What that actually looks like:

Narcissus, conscious — owns the beauty, recognizes the reflection, doesn’t drown. The gift is genuine. The tragedy was never the myth. It was the not-knowing.

Puer aeternus, conscious — keeps the childlike wonder, the lightness, the refusal to be prematurely closed. And takes accountability. The eternal child who finally arrives without losing what made him luminous.

Cassandra, conscious — carries the knowledge without needing Troy to believe her. The curse breaks not when the city listens. It breaks when she stops needing it to.

Apollo, conscious — pattern-seeking with mythic grounding underneath it. The rational mind in service of wisdom rather than in flight from the unconscious. The difference between genuine discernment and conspiracy is exactly this: whether Apollo knows his own myth.

And something else happens when you step outside your myth and see it clearly.

Compassion. For yourself first. Then for everyone else you recognize living the same pattern without knowing what they’re in. The lake weeps for Narcissus — not because the myth is tragic, but because the beauty was real and the drowning was unnecessary. That is what conscious myth-holding feels like from the inside.

Wholeness is not one or the other. It is the tension held consciously. The childlike wonder and the accountability. The gift and the wound. The prophet and the humility to know the limits of the knowing.

Both true simultaneously.

The self-help version says: fix the shadow, become better. The Jungian version says: know your myth, hold the tension, become whole.

Those are completely different instructions.

The Path to Wholeness

There are many paths. All of them, when they’re working, contain the same things.

A confrontation with the shadow. The discovery of your myth. The willingness to make the unconscious conscious — through journaling, through therapy, through plant medicine, through dream work, through active imagination. These are real vehicles for real transformation. None of them wrong. All of them pointing in the same direction.

And your myth is specific. It won’t look like anyone else’s. It might be Helen — the one who gets projected onto, and in the projecting, you lose yourself. The war fought in someone else’s name. The self surrendered to the image. It might be the Cassandra figure who finally stops needing to be believed. It might be the puer who learns to land without losing his wings.

It might be Ophelia. Defined entirely by the relationship, by the grief, by what was done to her rather than what she chose. She drowns not because she was weak but because she never found her own myth. She was living someone else’s — and it could not hold her.

But here is what the myth offers that the tragedy doesn’t: awareness. If you can see the myth you’re living, you can make the fully conscious decision to choose differently. Taylor saw the Fate of Ophelia coming. She named it and didn’t drown.

That is the whole point of finding your myth.

Most paths get you there through confrontation — the shadow work, the dream, the ceremony, the long slow excavation of what’s been buried. All of it real. All of it valid.

But there is another way. A different way to excavate your myth.

It doesn’t begin with a practice or a framework. It begins with something you almost dismiss — a coincidence too precise to ignore, a symbol that keeps returning, a song that arrives at exactly the wrong moment with exactly the right words.

I call it following the synchronicities. The messages from the unconscious, loaded with meaning, arriving uninvited and pointing somewhere specific. Not random. Not mystical. Purposeful — if you know how to read them.

The invisible string was always there. You just have to learn to follow it.

First, A Recommendation

Before I say anything else: go listen to The Swiftie and the Scholar.

If you haven’t found them yet, Angela and Jerry have created something genuinely rare — a space where scholarship meets real fandom, and both serve to illuminate the other. Jerry has a scholar’s love of myth — and across episode after episode, he has shown what it looks like to take ancient story seriously as a lens for contemporary life. Angela brings the Swiftie’s emotional intelligence, the kind that knows these songs from the inside. Together they are funny, smart, and entertaining. The love of music, myth, and art is visible in every episode.

Their reading of “Cassandra” is smart and genuinely moving. Jerry, in particular, really seemed to enjoy this episode and brought real scholarly weight to the myth of Cassandra.

As a Jungian, there was one metaphor I found both interesting and quietly amusing: the description of the Tower.

The Oedipal Tower

Jerry’s reading of the tower isn’t arbitrary. It’s internally consistent with a specific and very influential tradition.

Freud organized virtually all of human psychology around a single myth: Oedipus. Desire, power, rivalry, the threat of castration, the authority of the father — in the Freudian frame, these forces underlie everything. They are the deep grammar of the psyche. And when you’re reading the world through an Oedipal lens, a tower is almost inevitably phallic. It’s a symbol of patriarchal dominance. Vertical. Imposing. Built by power, sustained by power, used to confine what power cannot otherwise control. It’s one reason traditional psychoanalysis tends to find phallic symbolism everywhere it looks.

In that reading, Taylor weaves her nightmares inside a cage she didn’t build. The tower is what was done to her. Her weaving is coping. Her smiles twisted into snarls are the natural result of prolonged confinement in a structure designed by and for the people who silenced her voice.

That reading is real. And it is Oedipal all the way down.

Carl Jung’s disagreement with Freud was, at its core, a disagreement about this. Jung thought Freud had taken one myth — one story — and forced the entire human psyche through it. He thought the unconscious was far larger than any single narrative could contain. He went looking for other myths. Other symbols. Other containers.

And when Jung looked at a tower, he didn’t see a phallus.

What Jung Saw Instead

Jung built a tower.

Not metaphorically. With his own hands — stone by stone, on the shore of Lake Zurich at Bollingen — beginning in 1923 and continuing to build and expand it for the rest of his life. He described it from the beginning as “a place of maturation — a maternal womb or maternal figure in which I could become what I was, what I am, and will be.”

Maternal. Not phallic. Womb-like. Generative.

This is not a semantic quibble. It is the entire difference between the two traditions. Where Freud’s Oedipal tower is vertical, imposing, penetrating — a symbol of the father’s authority — Jung’s tower is enclosed, receptive, containing. It is the vas hermeticum of the medieval alchemists: the sealed vessel in which raw material is held under pressure long enough to transform into something else. A sealed inner space, set apart from the noise of the ordinary world, where the real work of becoming can happen.

You don’t go into the Jungian tower because someone put you there.

You go because the outer world has exhausted what it has to offer, and the only frontier left is inside.

It is also worth noting, with some irony, that the tower Jung built was the precise opposite of an ivory tower — that other famous tower, the fortress of detached pure intellect, sealed off from feeling and myth and the body. Bollingen had no electricity. No telephone. Jung cooked over an open fire and carried water from a pump. It was the place where that kind of cold, airless knowing deliberately ended.

Taylor is weaving in her tower. Not imprisoned. Not coping.

Working.

That single verb — weaving — is doing everything. Weaving is active, creative, purposeful. The Fates weave. Penelope weaves. You weave when you are making something from the threads available to you, including the dark ones. The Oedipal reading turns Taylor’s tower into a cage. The Jungian reading turns it into a loom.

The Tower and the Wise Old Man

Jung was a serious student of symbol systems — alchemy, astrology, mythology, Gnosticism. He understood that the psyche thinks in images long before it thinks in words, and that certain images recur across cultures and centuries because they are carrying something too large for language alone. He knew the Tarot.

And the tower he would have recognized there was not a prison.

Think of every tower in the Western imagination that houses a figure of knowledge. Merlin in his tower, surrounded by books and starlight, reading the pattern of things. The sorcerer at the top of the winding stair, beyond the reach of ordinary life, communing with forces the village below cannot see. The wizard, the alchemist, the hermit — these figures don’t end up in towers because they were confined there. They climb toward the height because the height is where the seeing happens. Distance from the ordinary world is not punishment. It is the condition of a particular kind of knowing.

The tower, in this symbolic tradition, is where wisdom lives. Not where power imprisons.

And that is exactly the tower Jung found in the Tarot.

The Tarot Tower

The Tower is the sixteenth card of the Major Arcana. Most people find it alarming — and they’re right to. It depicts a tall structure struck by lightning, flames erupting from its windows, two figures falling from its heights.

Jung would read every element of this image deliberately.

The tower itself: not a prison, but a structure that has grown too rigid. A vessel that stopped being able to hold what was living inside it — a relationship, a public identity, a belief about how the world works — until the pressure made collapse inevitable.

The two figures falling: not victims of the lightning, but people who were already inside a structure that could no longer contain them. In Jungian terms, they are two aspects of the self — cast out from the false foundation, falling toward something more true.

But the lightning itself — that is something else entirely.

It doesn’t create the catastrophe. The Tower was always unstable. The lightning simply reveals what was already true — makes visible, in one shattering moment, what the structure could not indefinitely conceal. The bolt doesn’t destroy the self inside the tower. It destroys the false architecture around it. The persona. The reputation. The carefully managed public image that has slowly become more mask than face.

And for Jung, the lightning bolt carries a second meaning — one he spent the later decades of his life trying to name. He called it synchronicity: the meaningful coincidence, the moment when inner psychological reality and outer event align in a way that exceeds rational explanation. Not cause and effect. Not superstition. Something more precise than either: the unconscious speaking the same truth through multiple channels simultaneously.

Lightning as Synchronicity

For Jung, synchronicity was like a lightning flash — a sudden illumination from the unconscious. Think of the wizard in the tower completing their spell: the lightning consumes the room, and nothing is ever the same again. Not because the lightning caused something. Because it revealed something that was already true.

The lightning bolt is synchronicity made visible. The outer world confirming what the inner world already knew. The knowledge was always there. The lightning just makes it impossible to look away.

Jung saw these moments as sign from the unconscious. Not commands. Not prophecies. Simply: pay attention. The unconscious, unable to speak in plain language, speaks instead in coincidence — in the book that falls open to exactly the right page, in the conversation that arrives at precisely the right moment, in the song that says the thing you had no words for yet.

The Jungian Tower in Song

If the Oedipal tower is confinement, the Jungian tower is something else entirely. Perhaps another Taylor Swift song describes it best: “exile.”

Not exile as punishment, though it begins that way. Exile as the condition in which the inner work becomes possible. The outer world has collapsed, or cast you out, or become too loud to hear yourself in. And so you retreat — into the tower, into the self, into the only territory no one else can enter.

“exile” is the Tower moment in real time. Two voices — Taylor and Bon Iver — singing simultaneously, neither one able to hear the other. “You never gave a warning sign / I gave so many signs.” They are both saying it at once. The structure is already coming down. Neither person has looked up yet.

What makes “exile” Jungian rather than merely tragic is its counterpoint structure. The two voices never resolve into dialogue. They remain entirely separate, complete within themselves, each speaking into a silence the other cannot fill. It is not an argument. It is two voices talking past each other — and the lightning, when it comes, does not bring them together. It simply ends the pretense that the structure between them was ever stable.

This is the Jungian tower as lived experience: not the cage Freud describes, but the sealed vessel. Each person enclosed in their own self. Each speaking their own truth, which the other cannot hear.

And when the outer relationship finally falls — when the exile from each other becomes complete — what remains?

The tower. The inner space. The loom.

Jung’s break with Freud silenced him within the psychoanalytic establishment. What followed were years of voluntary descent into the interior — visions, active imagination, the long dark work that became The Red Book. He didn’t emerge from that exile having recovered what he lost. He emerged having built something that could only have been built in the wilderness of it.

Taylor’s 2016 exile produced Reputation. Built entirely from inside the silence. Woven in the tower of her disappearance.

Three Exiles

Here is where the thing that has been assembling itself in the background finally steps into full light.

Three prophets. Three towers. Three exiles.

Cassandra. Given the gift of prophecy by earth-knowledge older than any god. Cursed so that her voice would never be believed — she would speak clearly, and no one would hear the truth in it. She warned Troy. She was right about everything. The city burned anyway. And after the fall, she was dragged into exile. Enslaved. Killed. Her story, in the myth, ends in pure tragedy: her voice intact, the words always perfectly spoken, and no one who would listen.

Jung. In 1912, he published the book he knew would end everything. Psychology of the Unconscious — the text that stepped too far outside the Oedipal frame to be forgiven. The break was catastrophic. He was expelled from the psychoanalytic establishment. Dismissed as a mystic. Labeled dangerous. When Freud finally severed the relationship, Jung wrote in his diary: “the rest is silence.”

The prophet rendered mute.

The prophet whose voice the institution would not carry wrote, anyway, in the wilderness — for a reader a century away.

Taylor. 2016. The snake emojis flood her Instagram by the millions. The public narrative collapses. She disappears from public life for nearly a year — the longest silence of her career. The exile begins.

And then Reputation arrives. Built entirely from inside that silence. Woven in the tower of her disappearance.

The three exiles are not parallel by accident. They are the same archetypal structure, finding its expression across centuries, across genders, across disciplines. The prophet speaks. The words fall into silence. The tower falls. The exile begins. And in the wilderness — in the tower built by hand, in the Red Book, or in the album recorded in silence — the real work gets done.

That descent — into exile, into the sealed vessel, into the Self — is what Jung called individuation. Not a punishment. Not a detour. The path itself.

This is what a single symbol can hold when you step outside the frame. The Freudian tower and the Jungian tower are not competing answers. Freud asks whose power built the structure. Jung asks what you become inside it.

Cassandra weaves in her tower. Jung built his. Taylor disappeared into hers and came back with Reputation.

The symbol doesn’t change. The lens does. And what you see through it changes everything.

The Other Cassandra

If you’ve been reading this series from the beginning, pause for a moment and take stock of what you’re already carrying.

You know the myth. Cassandra — Trojan prophetess, gifted with genuine foresight, cursed by Apollo so that no one would ever believe her. She saw the fall of Troy. She screamed the warnings. She was dismissed as mad. The city burned anyway.

You understand that this isn’t only a myth. It’s an archetype — a pattern in human experience so fundamental and recurring that it appears independently across cultures, across centuries, across every civilization that has ever had to reckon with the problem of truth-telling and the refusal to hear it. We’ve traced it through three figures. Cassandra herself — the prophet whose urgent warnings become her diagnosis in the eyes of others. Apollo — the god of rational order that lives in every psyche, the part of us that reflexively dismisses what it cannot systematize, cannot authorize, cannot contain. And Narcissus — whom we’ll come to properly in this issue, the figure who completes the triangle in ways that will, I suspect, feel uncomfortably familiar.

We touched on gaslighting — not as a buzzword but as a fundamental concept — and on psychological projection: the way the thing that cannot be acknowledged gets placed onto someone else to carry. For denial to hold, the prophet must be made to seem crazy. Or just plain mad and angry. Hysterical. Unstable. The urgency becomes the diagnosis — and eventually, after long enough, she begins to doubt her own knowledge. The more precisely she sees, the more unstable she appears.

We’ve noted, in passing, that this machinery operates in politics too — that the climate scientist, the historian, the journalist who spent twenty years watching democratic norms erode and was called alarmist, paranoid, hysterical — these are political Cassandras.

But this issue is about a different kind of Cassandra. A quieter one. The one whose disbelief doesn’t happen on a stage or in a newspaper.

It happens behind a closed door. In the most intimate possible language.

Same Myth, Different Wound

There is a term that comes from a completely different tradition than Jung — not from analytic psychology, not from mythography, but from the world of trauma-informed therapy and narcissistic abuse recovery.

It’s called Cassandra Syndrome.

Same myth. Different lineage entirely.

The therapist and writer Toby Ingham, working with survivors of narcissistic abuse, identified a pattern so consistent across cases that it needed its own name. The person who accurately perceives something in a relationship — a dynamic, a danger, a fundamental truth about the person they are with — and is then systematically convinced by that person that they are wrong. Imagining things. Projecting. Overreacting. Mentally unstable.

What Ingham observed, crucially, is that the damage goes deeper than being disbelieved. Over time, the external invalidation becomes internal. The Cassandra in an abusive relationship doesn’t just lose the argument. She loses the narrator. The voice that used to say I know what I saw goes quiet — slowly, under the accumulated weight of being told she didn’t. She begins to doubt her own perceptions from the inside. The gaslighting colonizes the inner life.

The prophet, disbelieved — not by divine curse, but by a person who needed her to be wrong in order to remain comfortable in their world-view. And as we’ll note in passing: the same dynamic that operates between two people can operate between a political party and an entire electorate. When acknowledging the truth would require dismantling the story a group or individual has built its identity around, the prophet gets pathologized there too. The mechanism is identical. Only the scale changes.

That is the myth doing what myths have always done — marking the shape of something real that keeps recurring in human experience regardless of time or culture. There are no new stories. Only new people living the old ones, usually without knowing which story they’re in.

Which is exactly why finding your myth matters. Not as metaphor. As map.

The political Cassandra has witnesses. History, eventually, vindicates her — or at least records the failure to listen. The intimate Cassandra often has neither. Her Troy burns in private. And she is frequently left holding the diagnosis that was meant to silence her.

“It’s Me, Hi, I’m the Problem, It’s Me”

You’ve seen the journals. The guided prompts. The Instagram accounts built entirely around meet your shadow self content. Shadow work has become, in the last few years, one of the fastest-growing corners of the self-help world — and for genuinely good reasons. Jung’s core insight holds: the parts of ourselves we refuse to see don’t disappear. They go underground. They become buried in the unconscious — and manifest through our projections, our blind spots, the patterns we keep repeating without knowing why.

There is a book that captures the spirit of this inner journey better than most of the self-help industry manages. Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist is, on the surface, a simple story — a shepherd boy who leaves everything familiar and follows the signs toward something he cannot yet name. But what Coelho is really describing is the great adventure of individuation. The willingness to read the omens, to follow the synchronicities wherever they lead, to let the old self dissolve so something truer can emerge. Finding your Personal Legend, as he calls it, is the act of individuation itself. It is finding your myth — the story you were always living, finally seen clearly enough to be lived with intention.

That’s the spirit of genuine shadow work. Not a checklist. An adventure into the parts of yourself that have been waiting in the dark.

But here is what the self-help version rarely says plainly.

The journey is hardest — almost structurally impossible — for one particular type of person.

The narcissist.

The Faces of Narcissus

We need to be careful here. Narcissism has become one of those words that has drifted so far from its clinical meaning it’s nearly useless — hurled in arguments, applied casually to anyone who’s ever disappointed us, attached almost automatically to a single obvious political archetype. When we talk about narcissism that way, we miss most of the territory.

The clinical map is more complicated. And knowing which face you’re looking at — or living with — matters considerably.

The Grandiose (Overt) Narcissist is the version we picture. The room fills when they enter. They need to win every exchange, claim every accomplishment, bend every conversation back toward their own reflection. At its most extreme — the malignant variant — this type adds cruelty without remorse and a contempt for the perceptions of others that is essentially complete. This is the face that maps most obviously onto political archetypes, and we’ll note it without belaboring it. It is dangerous. It is also, paradoxically, often the most identifiable — and therefore, eventually, the most possible to name and leave.

The Covert/Vulnerable Narcissist may be the trickiest to define — and the most important to understand, because this is the type most likely to be sharing a home with you. Taylor Swift names it better than most clinical descriptions manage: “My covert narcissism I disguise as altruism / Like some kind of congressman.” The congressman is the key image here. This version of narcissism doesn’t announce itself with ego or cruelty. It arrives dressed as sacrifice — the person who gives everything, asks for nothing, and quietly keeps score of every unanswered debt. The harm it does is slow and quiet. A sigh at the wrong moment. A gentle redirection of your concern back toward their pain. A steady erosion in which your clarity becomes aggression, your urgency becomes selfishness, and your needs become evidence of your inadequacy. You find yourself apologizing for things you saw clearly. Doubting perceptions that were accurate. Shrinking to fit a space that keeps getting smaller.

The Communal Narcissist operates through virtue. The identity is built entirely around moral standing — the activist, the community leader, the tireless public servant. The narcissistic supply comes not from admiration of power but from being seen as the good one, the selfless one, the person without whom everything falls apart. The mask here is righteous, which makes it the hardest to challenge directly. To question them is to question their goodness — and they will experience that not as feedback but as an attack on their fundamental worth as a person.

“Virtue signaling” — the term the political right uses for the public performance of moral concern — names something real. Communal narcissism exists. People do perform goodness for supply rather than actually doing good. That is a genuine pathology, and it deserves to be named.

But the projection that follows is where the gaslighting enters. The assumption that all good works are performative. That anyone who expresses concern for the environment, or for the vulnerable, or for justice, is simply feeding their own ego. That liberalism itself is a form of communal narcissism. This collapses a real psychological pattern onto everyone it is politically convenient to dismiss — and in doing so, makes the motive the story rather than the work. It is the same move Troy makes with Cassandra. You don’t have to engage the warning. You only have to make the person issuing it seem like they’re doing it for themselves.

Underneath all of this, of course, is the deeper argument — the one that rarely gets named directly. Who decides what counts as good works? That is not a psychology question. That is a political question and it is best expressed at the ballot box.

What Gets Lost in Translation

Across all three presentations, the mechanism is the same.

Gaslighting doesn’t require malice. It requires only a person whose own psychological survival depends on your perception being wrong. The grandiose version is loud. The covert version is quiet. The communal version is righteous. But they all arrive at the same place.

For Cassandra, the accurate perception becomes the problem. Your urgency becomes your diagnosis. The thing you saw clearly, named precisely, tried to transmit — gets lost in translation. Not because the language failed. Because the narcissist is incapable of hearing it. This is Cassandra’s curse in its most intimate form: not the prophet screaming at the gates of Troy, but the person sitting across a kitchen table, speaking clearly, being processed as noise.

This is what Toby Ingham observed in his clinical work: the Cassandra in a narcissistic relationship does not simply lose the argument. She loses the sense that her perceptions are trustworthy at all. The gaslighting doesn’t stay outside. It gets in.

And this — not the initial disbelief — is the deepest wound of the archetype. The city can burn, and that is tragedy. But the person who stops trusting their own knowledge and intuition? That is the curse completing itself.

The Past as Prologue

Here is something that rarely gets said in conversations about narcissistic abuse — and it matters.

Traditional therapy has a problem with narcissism. As a clinical pathology, it is widely considered resistant to treatment — the very defense structure that defines it makes genuine self-examination almost impossible. You cannot dismantle the mirror from inside the reflection. Conventional approaches hit this wall, and the honest clinical literature knows it.

But Jungian psychology asks a different question entirely. Not how do we fix this pathology — but what myth is this person living?

Your personal myth might be Cassandra — the truth-teller whose knowledge was always turned against her, whose clarity was always reframed as madness. Or it might be Narcissus — the one who drowned in the lake of his own reflection, incapable of genuine encounter with another, searching every face for his own image and finding only hunger.

Neither myth is a verdict. Both are maps.

With individuation comes intention. The willingness to look at the story you have been living — not to excuse it, but to understand it clearly enough to begin to change it. What might that look like for the narcissist who finds their myth?

Paulo Coelho had an answer. He put it in the prologue — before Santiago takes his first step, before the journey begins, before the desert and the omens and the treasure. Before any of it.

The Alchemist picked up a book that someone in the caravan had brought. Leafing through the pages, he found a story about Narcissus.

The Alchemist knew the legend of Narcissus, a youth who knelt daily beside a lake to contemplate his own beauty. He was so fascinated by himself that, one morning, he fell into the lake and drowned. At the spot where he fell, a flower was born, which was called the narcissus.

But this was not how the author of the book ended the story.

He said that when Narcissus died, the Goddesses of the Forest appeared and found the lake, which had been fresh water, transformed into a lake of salty tears.

“Why do you weep?” the Goddesses asked.

“I weep for Narcissus,” the lake replied.

“Ah, it is no surprise that you weep for Narcissus,” they said, “for though we always pursued him in the forest, you alone could contemplate his beauty close at hand.”

“But… was Narcissus beautiful?” the lake asked.

“Who better than you to know that?” the Goddesses said in wonder. “After all, it was by your banks that he knelt each day to contemplate himself!”

The lake was silent for some time. Finally it said:

“I weep for Narcissus, but I never noticed that Narcissus was beautiful. I weep because, each time he knelt beside my banks, I could see, in the depths of his eyes, my own beauty reflected.”

“What a lovely story,” the Alchemist thought.

The Alchemist sees what neither Narcissus nor the lake could. He sees the whole story.

Not to become Narcissus. Not to become the lake.

To become the one who can hold the whole picture — the reflection, the tragedy, the beauty hidden inside the loss — and understand what neither participant could see from where they stood.

That is the Alchemist’s work.

Wholeness.

Taylor Swift wrote a song called “Cassandra.” It stays true to the myth -- not a song about a name, but about the archetype itself. The person cursed with knowledge, doomed to be dismissed. The last line of the chorus is a question directed at the people who did not listen, spoken from the ruins of the thing she warned them about:

“Do you believe me now?”

It is not a triumphant question. It is the most exhausted question imaginable. The question you ask when being right has cost you everything and changed nothing. When the city is already burning.

In Part 1 of this series, I laid out the technical definition of fascism -- what it actually is, how it differs from ideology, how it operates through violence, the scapegoat, the mythic restoration narrative, and the loyalty oath. I described how Jung identified it as the shadow of the collective unconscious made real. I introduced the Helen Problem -- the mechanism of projection that operates identically at the individual and the collective level.

This piece is about what it cost to carry that knowledge. And, at the end, about what Jung thought was the only real cure -- for the movement, and for the people who saw it coming.

The Cassandras: Americans Who Saw It Coming

In December 2024, journalist Toby Buckle published a piece in The New Republic titled “The Americans Who Saw All This Coming -- but Were Ignored and Maligned.” He interviewed 37 ordinary Americans -- not professional commentators, not political scientists -- who called Trump’s movement fascist from the very beginning. Who predicted specific milestones of democratic decline well in advance. Who were convinced they were right, did everything they could to get others to listen, and were attacked, dismissed, and pathologized for it -- even as events proved them right, again and again.

Buckle calls them Cassandras. He does not attach a negative connotation to the term.

Who are they? Mostly women. Disproportionately Black Americans, trans and nonbinary people, and people who have lived for extended periods in deeply conservative areas. They span every income level, every occupation, every region of the country. Janitors and Wall Street bankers. Army veterans and animal vets. Software engineers and food delivery drivers. What they share is not demographics. It is a way of seeing.

Buckle identifies what he calls “The Cassandra Song” -- the logical structure that all 37 shared, regardless of how they expressed it. It plays in three movements: Trump said the bad outcome. We had good reasons to think he meant it. We had good reasons to think his base wanted it. That is it. Not pattern recognition as mystical gift -- pattern recognition as basic reasoning. As Buckle writes, the mythical Cassandra hardly needed divine gifts to sense that the enemy army vanishing and leaving behind a giant wooden horse was “a bit sus.” Her modern counterparts were not uncovering carefully concealed secrets. They were simply using their eyes, ears, and basic reasoning.

So why did so many fight them so hard?

The Anti-Alarmists: How Sophisticated Denial Works

Buckle identifies a specific class of people who performed a crucial function throughout the Trump era. Not pro-Trump -- they would have been offended by the suggestion. But furiously, condescendingly against the Cassandra read of him. He calls them anti-alarmists.

The anti-alarmist’s core move is to conflate calm tone with rationality. Any expression of fear or anger from a Cassandra is treated as proof that the speaker is not to be taken seriously. The urgency becomes the diagnosis. The earnestness becomes the disqualification.

The list of anti-alarmists Buckle assembles is notable not for its villains but for its respectability. Ezra Klein. Matt Yglesias. Brett Stephens. Jon Stewart. David Brooks. As late as February 2025 -- after January 6, after Project 2025 was being implemented in real time -- respected legal commentator Noah Feldman was casually asserting the constitutional system was “working fine.” Jon Stewart scolded people who used the word “fascist,” claiming all they had done “over the last ten years is cry wolf.”

Stewart’s framing is worth sitting with. He is not a bad person. He is not pro-fascism. He is someone whose need to appear sophisticated, above-the-fray, not-one-of-those-hysterical-liberals directly served the project he believed himself to be opposing. The Cassandras’ urgency became the story. The approaching army disappeared behind the spectacle of someone being too earnest about it.

Buckle traces the gender dimension of this dynamic with precision. American politics associates conservatism with masculinity and liberalism with femininity. The Cassandras -- disproportionately women, or people from groups whose pain and fear is routinely discounted -- were making female-coded arguments. The anti-alarmists were performing male-coded sophistication. “Hysterical.” “Sanctimonious.” “Annoying.” “Cringe.” The language is not accidental. It is the same move made across every version of the Cassandra myth: her urgency becomes her diagnosis.

What makes this more than a media criticism story is the structural point underneath it. Troy cannot simply ignore Cassandra. It must make her feel that her knowing is the problem -- that the warning is the pathology, not the approaching army. As I traced in a previous piece in this series, this is gaslighting functioning as a structural requirement of the curse. And after long enough, it begins to operate from within. The Cassandra starts to doubt her own perception. Troy does not just ignore the warning. It makes the prophet doubt the snakes.

The False Equivalence Trap

“Both sides do it” is not a neutral observation. In the context of this analysis, it is a category error -- and a consequential one.

Treating a party that debates tax policy with a party that has embraced political violence as symmetrical phenomena is not balance. It is a distortion that does the fascist project’s rhetorical work for it. The both-sides frame makes the accurate diagnosis unspeakable in polite company -- which is precisely its function.

Here is the diagnostic test, stated cleanly. Does the political movement organize around a dehumanized scapegoat? Does it use or excuse political violence as a tool? Does it demand loyalty to a leader over democratic norms and institutions? Does it operate from a mythic restoration narrative rather than a policy platform? If yes -- that is not ideology. That is something else. And calling it both sides is not fairness. It is a category error that protects the mechanism from scrutiny.

Maria Ressa documented the fully-deployed version of this playbook in the Philippines before it arrived in America. She was attacked from both sides simultaneously -- accused of being CIA and communist in the same breath. Neither was true. The point was never accuracy. The point was to destroy the credibility of the person naming the mechanism. The scapegoating turns on the Cassandra figure herself. Name the process accurately and you become the next target of the process you named.

In Aeschylus, the chorus calls Cassandra’s words “unintelligible” even as she describes events with perfect clarity. In Shakespeare’s Troilus and Cressida, her brother dismisses her as their “mad sister.” Across every version of the myth, the same move is made: her urgency becomes her diagnosis. The mechanism that silenced Cassandra and the mechanism that produces “Trump Derangement Syndrome” (TDS) accusations are the same mechanism. Only the vocabulary is different.

Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger proved something important by paying an enormous personal price to hold a specific line. Real conservatism is a legitimate democratic participant. The argument has never been about ideology. It has always been about the specific, technical, measurable markers that separate democratic participation from something categorically different.

The Cassandra Reckoning

I studied this. I applied the framework carefully. I said what I saw.

The responses I received -- the TDS accusations, the charges of hysteria, the both-sidesing, the suggestion that my political concern was itself a pathology -- are data points in the analysis. The mechanism I was describing was demonstrated by the response to my describing it. The problem kept getting relocated. From the approaching army. To my brain.

Buckle’s 37 Cassandras experienced the same thing. Universally. Across demographics, geographies, income levels, and occupations. The pattern was identical: see clearly, speak plainly, get dismissed. Not because the analysis was wrong. Because the people around them needed it to be wrong. The Cassandra curse is not a personal failing. It is a structural feature of how denial operates under pressure.

Troy did not fall because the Greek army was strong. It fell because the city had perfected, over years, the art of not listening -- and had built a social immune system that neutralized anyone whose knowledge the prevailing myth could not contain.

Do you believe me now?

It is the most exhausted question. And it deserves a real answer.

The Jungian Cure: Two Directions

Jung believed the shadow, once projected outward and organized into a political movement, had a cure. Not a political cure. A psychological one.

The fascist movement has been doing what unintegrated shadow always does -- projecting its darkest material onto the scapegoat. The fear. The grief. The loss. The shame of a civilization that feels it has failed to become what it promised itself it would be. All of that gets displaced onto the libs, the immigrants, the woke, the infected. The cure, in Jungian terms, is integration. To turn and face what has been projected. To own the corruption, the violence, the authoritarian impulse -- to recognize it as something within, not something the enemy brought. That is individuation at the collective level. It is painful. It is slow. It requires the myth to die. And it is the only thing that actually stops the projection.

The scapegoat cannot be eliminated into paradise. The golden age cannot be restored by destroying the serpent. The shadow pursued outward only grows. Jung knew this. History confirms it. The only exit from the projection is through it.

And the Cassandra figure has her own version of the same cure -- which is where this series is ultimately going.

In the myth as we have inherited it, the story ends in pure tragedy. Cassandra unheeded, enslaved, killed. The curse is never transformed. She carries the knowledge to the end and it costs her everything. She keeps trying to make Troy believe her -- and that need, that compulsion to be believed before she can be whole, is itself part of the trap. The curse does not only come from Apollo. After long enough, it begins to come from within.

Jung found a different route. Not because the world finally listened -- it largely did not, not in his lifetime -- but because he stopped making the world’s belief the measure of his wholeness. He kept writing anyway. The Red Book was not written for an audience. It was written because bearing witness to what he knew -- before the institutions were ready to hold it, before the vocabulary existed to receive it -- was itself the transformation.

The curse stops being a curse not when Troy finally believes you. It stops being a curse when you stop needing Troy to believe you in order to be whole.

The political knowledge is real. The dismissed warnings are real. The gaslighting -- external and internal -- is real. And the cure is real too. Not vindication. Not “I told you so.” Wholeness. The integration of what you know, on your own terms, regardless of whether the city burns or survives.

That is the transformation this series is tracing. Two directions. The fascist movement needs individuation -- to face and integrate the shadow it has been projecting outward. The Cassandra figure needs transformation -- to stop needing to be believed in order to carry her knowing with dignity.

Both cures require the same thing: the courage to look directly at what you have been avoiding.

Troy did not listen. But the question was never really whether Troy would listen. The question was always who you become in the carrying of the knowledge -- before the walls come down, during the fire, and after.

The Credential Problem

I have a political science degree from American University, class of 1999. Washington D.C. — the actual seat of American political power. I didn’t study politics from a distance. I was surrounded by it, trained in it, shaped by it. Comparative politics. Political theory. Democratic systems and the things that threaten them.

That training gave me a technical vocabulary for fascism — specific, historically grounded, precise. For years I applied that framework carefully to what I was watching unfold in American politics. I checked myself against the academic literature. I followed political scientists like Ruth Ben-Ghiat and Rachel Bitecofer, whose empirical rigor I respected. I updated my analysis when new evidence arrived.

But the political framework alone only explained the phenomenon. It didn’t explain the human architecture underneath it — why people follow fascist movements, why they can’t hear the warnings against them, why the person sounding the alarm gets pathologized instead of believed.

That second layer arrived later, through Carl Jung. Specifically through the concept Jung called the shadow — the disowned, unacknowledged parts of the self that don’t disappear when ignored but instead get projected outward onto others. And through a related concept that eventually applied to my own experience: the Cassandra Complex.

The Cassandra Complex describes a specific psychological experience — the experience of knowing something true, saying it clearly, and being systematically dismissed. Not because the analysis is wrong. Because the people around you need it to be wrong. The knowledge is accurate. That’s the problem.

In Greek myth, Cassandra was a Trojan prophetess gifted with perfect foresight and cursed so that no one would believe her. She warned Troy about the wooden horse. She warned about the army hidden inside. She was precise, urgent, entirely correct. The city burned anyway.

The political science degree told me what fascism was. Jung told me why it was so hard to hear — and why the person naming it accurately becomes, in the eyes of the people who need not to hear it, the problem. In a previous piece in this series, I traced how gaslighting functions as a structural requirement of the Cassandra curse — how Troy cannot simply ignore Cassandra, but must make her feel that her knowing is the pathology, not the approaching army. That mechanism scales. It operates between two people. It operates between a movement and the people warning about it. And after long enough, it begins to operate from within — the dismissed prophet starting to doubt her own perception.

I am not alone in arriving at this particular crossroads. Maria Ressa — Nobel Peace Prize laureate, founder of the Philippine news organization Rappler, Harvard honorary doctorate recipient — stood at Harvard’s commencement in 2024 and said this:

“The British are coming. Well, today’s equivalent, an alarm that’s made me feel like Cassandra and Sisyphus combined, because I feel like I’ve been shouting since 2016 when I watched our institutions crumble quickly in the Philippines, and I will say it now: the fascists are coming.”

Ressa didn’t arrive at that language through mythology or psychology. She arrived at it through being on the receiving end of a fascist information operation in real time — ninety hate messages per hour, death threats for breakfast, dehumanized, accused simultaneously of being both CIA and communist. None of it true. All of it deliberate.

The people who have been most precisely correct about fascism keep arriving at the same mythological container to describe what it costs to carry that knowledge. That is not a coincidence. It is a structural feature of what fascism does to the people who name it accurately.

What Fascism Actually Is

This is where most political arguments go wrong before they begin. People treat fascism as a point on an ideological spectrum — a really extreme version of conservatism, perhaps, or the logical endpoint of nationalism. That framing is incorrect, and the error is consequential.

Ideology — real ideology — is about policy. It’s the debate between taxation models and abortion access and gun regulation and criminal justice and immigration law. These are genuine disagreements about how a society should organize itself, conducted between people who, however fiercely they disagree, share a basic commitment to democratic norms. You argue. You vote. You accept the outcome. You argue again next cycle.

Fascism is not that. Fascism is a categorically different phenomenon. The most important technical distinction is this: fascism uses violence as a feature, not a bug.

Violence — or the credible threat of it — is built into the architecture. It’s how fascism competes in spaces where it can’t win on argument. It’s how it silences opposition, enforces loyalty, and bypasses the democratic process it cannot afford to lose. This is why fascism is structurally incompatible with democracy — not because its policies are extreme, but because it has removed itself from the democratic game entirely.

The second structural element is the scapegoat. Every fascist movement organizes around one — a group blamed for the nation’s decline, its lost glory, its present suffering. And that group must be dehumanized. Not merely criticized or opposed, but stripped of their full humanity through language and imagery. This is not accidental. You cannot mobilize people to do what fascism requires against opponents they recognize as fully human. The dehumanization is load-bearing.

Watch the escalation in American political rhetoric over two decades: “welfare queens.” “Illegal aliens.” “Vermin.” “The woke mind virus.” Each step is measurable data. “Woke mind virus” is particularly precise as a dehumanizing construct — it frames the political opposition not as people with different views, but as infected. Compromised. Not fully in control of their own reasoning. You cannot negotiate with a virus. You can only eliminate it.

Jung described fascism as the shadow of the collective unconscious made real. Not a political failure — a psychological one. A society projecting its darkest, most disowned impulses onto an external group and then organizing violently around that projection. The shadow doesn’t disappear when you refuse to look at it. It grows. And eventually it finds a political vehicle.

These three elements — violence as feature, dehumanized scapegoat, collective shadow projection — form the technical core of the definition I’ve been working from. Not vibes. Not ideology. Measurable, historically verifiable markers.

The Myth and the Loyalty It Demands

There is a fourth element that provides the psychological fuel for everything else: the myth. Specifically, the myth of a golden age before the great betrayal.

“Make America Great Again” is not a policy platform. It is a restoration narrative. It doesn’t specify when America was great, or great for whom, because mythic truth doesn’t require historical accuracy. It requires emotional truth. The tribe coheres around a felt sense of stolen glory — a paradise that existed, was lost through treachery, and can be reclaimed through the right leader and the elimination of the right enemies.

This is why the scapegoat’s deepest function isn’t to explain current problems. It’s to explain why paradise was lost. The scapegoat is the serpent in the mythic garden — the agent of betrayal who caused the fall from glory. Without that figure, the myth collapses. Which is why the scapegoat must be perpetually maintained, perpetually blamed, perpetually present as the enemy.

The myth then demands something in return: loyalty. Not to a constitution, not to a policy platform, not to a party. To the leader who embodies the myth. In 2020, the Republican Party ran without a policy platform. They replaced it with a pledge of personal loyalty to Donald Trump. That is a historically and technically significant event. A major American political party dissolved its ideological commitments in favor of personal fealty. That is not conservative politics. That is something with a different name.

The Troy parallel is exact. The Trojans couldn’t surrender the myth — couldn’t consider that the war might be unwinnable, that the horse might be a trap — because the myth wasn’t just a story. It was their identity. To question the myth was to threaten the self. This is why Cassandra was not merely ignored but actively dismissed. She wasn’t wrong. She was sacrilegious. Her accuracy was the problem. Naming the approaching army meant naming the myth as false — and that was an existential threat the city could not tolerate.

Anyone who has tried to have a calm, evidence-based conversation about the direction of American politics in the last decade will recognize this dynamic immediately.

The Helen Problem

Here is a diagnostic tool I’ve found genuinely useful: ask someone what they think about Taylor Swift. Listen carefully. You will learn almost nothing about Taylor Swift and a great deal about the person speaking.

This is the Helen Problem — and understanding it reveals something important about how fascism actually operates at the psychological level.

Helen of Troy, in Homer, has almost no interiority. She is everywhere in the narrative and almost nowhere as a person. The Greeks project onto her: stolen glory, righteous vengeance, the justification for a decade of war. The Trojans project onto her: divine beauty, proof of their favor, the symbol of what they’re defending. The war is not really about Helen. It’s about what each side needs her to mean. She is a screen onto which the collective unconscious writes itself.

Jung identified Helen as the archetype of collective projection — the feminine image onto which the psyche maps its deepest desires, fears, and ideals. He wasn’t speaking metaphorically. He was describing a precise psychological mechanism: the inability to acknowledge something within the self, and the consequent need to locate it in an external figure and react to it there. The reaction tells you everything about the projector. Almost nothing about the target.

Classics scholar Ruby Blondell describes Helen as “an ever-refreshing screen for the projection of ideas and ideals about beauty, women, sex and power.” Her meaning is not in her actions but in the reactions she inspires. Homer was documenting a collective psychological phenomenon nearly three thousand years before Jung named it.

The pattern recurs throughout history precisely because the mechanism is constant. Marie Antoinette became the screen onto which revolutionary France projected everything wrong with the ancient régime — her actual complexity irrelevant, her symbolic function everything. Hillary Clinton: ask someone for their reaction and you receive a precise readout of their relationship to female ambition, institutional power, and tribal loyalty — almost nothing about the specific person. The Virgin Mary. Marilyn Monroe. AOC. Each one a surface carrying far more psychological weight than any individual can actually bear.

But here is where the Helen Problem stops being a cultural curiosity and becomes the political analysis: projection is projection whether it operates at the individual or the collective level. The mechanism that makes someone react to Taylor Swift as a tribal enemy is the same mechanism that produces the scapegoat. Same psychology. Different scale. Vastly different consequences.

The fascist scapegoat functions exactly as Helen does — as a screen onto which the movement projects everything it cannot acknowledge about itself. The corruption, the violence, the authoritarianism, the threat to democratic institutions — these cannot be owned, so they must be located in the enemy. The libs. The immigrants. The woke. The reaction tells you everything about the movement’s shadow and almost nothing about the actual target group.

This is why the accusation so often turns out to be the confession. The movement that cancels its opponents while building a narrative about leftist cancel culture. The movement that threatens democratic institutions while claiming to defend them. The projection is not incidental to the politics. It is the politics — the shadow made into a voting bloc.

When Trump announced “I hate Taylor Swift,” he wasn’t reacting to her music. He was reacting to what she represents to the tribe — she belongs to them, the enemy, the scapegoat. Hating her is not a position. It is a loyalty ritual. You prove belonging by demonstrating contempt for what they love. And crucially — you prove you have successfully projected your shadow outward, located it in the enemy, and are prepared to pursue it there.

Ask someone what they think of Taylor Swift. You’re watching the scapegoat mechanism in miniature, in real time, with low stakes. The same operation, run at national scale with a dehumanized outgroup, is what Jung called the shadow of the collective unconscious made real.

Negative Partisanship: Bitecofer’s Contribution

Political scientist Rachel Bitecofer’s research identified something that reframes how American elections actually function. Voters, particularly in the modern GOP coalition, are not primarily voting for anything. They are voting against the enemy. The scapegoat isn’t just rhetorical — it’s the organizing principle of the entire electoral coalition. Policy is secondary. Defeating them is primary.

This is the electoral expression of the projection mechanism. Once you understand that the movement organizes around a projected enemy rather than a policy vision, the behavior makes complete sense. You don’t need a platform. You need a target. Hatred of what they love is sufficient. The Taylor Swift moment, the systematic cancellation of journalists and entertainers who don’t perform sufficient tribal contempt — these aren’t distractions from the politics. They are the politics.

George W. Bush was a neoconservative. I disagreed with essentially everything he stood for. But he competed on policy grounds, operated within democratic norms, and accepted electoral outcomes. That is ideology — legitimate, debatable, democratic. The line is not policy. The line is violence and the scapegoat mechanism. Bush didn’t cross it. The party he once led has.

What This Isn’t

This argument is not that all Republicans are fascists, or that conservative ideology is invalid, or that policy disagreement is anything other than a feature of functioning democracy.

Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger proved something important by paying an enormous personal price to hold a specific line. They disagreed with Democrats on virtually every policy question. They held to democratic norms when it cost them everything within their own party. That is real conservatism as a democratic participant — legitimate, valuable, and worth distinguishing clearly from what replaced it.

The framework applies to specific, technical, measurable markers: violence, the scapegoat, the loyalty oath, the mythic restoration narrative. These are observable phenomena, not rhetorical weapons. The political valence follows the evidence, not the other way around.

A Scene That Never Made It Into the Myth

Before Apollo. Before the curse. Before any god entered her story.

There were snakes.

In one of the oldest strands of the Cassandra myth — older than the Apollo version, older than any divine transaction — Cassandra’s prophetic gift arrived not from Olympus but from the earth itself. Temple snakes licked her ears open while she slept. Ancient, chthonic creatures, symbols of the unconscious and the wisdom that moves beneath rational order. When she woke, she could hear what others could not. She could feel the shape of things before they arrived.

The knowledge was already hers. It came from below, not above. It belonged to no god.

Then Apollo noticed.

Apollo — god of rational light, of solar order, of the kind of knowing that can be systematized and controlled — wanted access to what Cassandra carried. Not to share it with her. To possess it. To bring that dark, chthonic, earth-born knowledge under Olympian management.

She refused.

And here is where history has quietly gaslit us all. The standard telling frames what follows as punishment for ingratitude — Apollo gave her prophecy, she reneged on the bargain, he withdrew his favor. But that account erases the most important detail: she was already a prophet. He gave her nothing. He came to take something that was hers, and when she refused him, he did the only thing available to him.

He corrupted the transmission.

Apollo: I want what you know. Share it with me — and I will make you my prophetess. Honoured. Elevated. Mine.

Cassandra: I am already a prophetess. And I am not yours.

Apollo: That knowledge came from forces beneath my dominion. That is an imbalance I cannot allow.

Cassandra: The snakes licked my ears open. The earth gave me this. You had nothing to do with it.

Apollo: Then I will make certain no one can receive what the earth gave you. You will speak your truth perfectly — in language crystal-clear — and not one soul will believe a word. You will know the language all too well. You will simply never be heard in it.

Cassandra: That isn’t a curse. That’s just what it’s already like.

Apollo: Yes. Now it will be permanent.

This dialogue is my reconstruction, not a classical text. But it is faithful to what the myth actually encodes when you follow the snakes back to their source. The punishment was not the withdrawal of a gift. The punishment was the weaponization of reception. He couldn’t silence her. So he made her signal permanently unreadable.

And — this is the part that should stop us cold — the god who designed that gap is the same god who lives in every person who later fails to receive her. The Apollo archetype, as Jungian analyst Laurie Layton Schapira identifies it, is the rational, ordering mind that reflexively disavows anything it cannot systematize. Apollo is both the origin of the curse and the psychological structure of every listener who embodies it. He created the condition and he inhabits the receiver.

Cassandra was never going to be heard. The system was designed from the inside.

Apollo won. Not at the gates. In the mind.

The Red Scarf

Here is something that has never quite been said plainly, though it has been hiding in plain sight for centuries.

Look at any painting of Cassandra. Evelyn De Morgan’s 1898 masterpiece — her arms extended, Troy burning behind her, the Trojan Horse visible through the smoke. The ancient Greek pottery. The Roman murals. The book cover of Emily Pillinger’s scholarly study, Cassandra and the Poetics of Prophecy: Cassandra reclining, the city alight in the background, a red garment draped from the pillar above her.

There is almost always a red cloth. A red veil. A red scarf.

It is her iconographic marker across two and a half thousand years of art. Not a coincidence of style. An archetypal symbol — the thing she carries between two worlds, the object that belongs to neither Troy nor Greece, that cannot be translated across the threshold she perpetually inhabits.

Now consider Taylor Swift’s All Too Well — widely regarded as her magnum opus, the song around which the entire Red era coheres. Its central symbol, the one that has generated more cultural debate than perhaps any object in contemporary music, is a red scarf. Left at a lover’s sister’s house. Kept in a drawer. The thing one person carried forward in memory while the other let go — or claimed to. The object whose ownership has been publicly argued over for years, its meaning perpetually contested, the truth of what it represents perpetually lost.

A red scarf. Lost in translation. Whose is it? What does it mean? Nobody can agree.

The culture has been enacting the curse while debating the object.

And then there is Maroon — the companion piece, the song that reaches back to the same wound from a different angle. “The mark they saw on my collarbone” The scarf becomes a brand, an impression left on skin, the physical evidence of something that passed between two people and could not be taken back even after everything else was. A mark that outlasts the relationship. A truth that persists even when nobody believes it.

This is not coincidence. This is the archetypal object finding its modern vessel.

In East Asian mythology, the red thread of fate — the invisible string — connects souls across time and distance. You cannot see it. You cannot sever it. It ties you to what you were always going to know, always going to feel, always going to be unable to make another person understand. It is the thread Cassandra was born holding. The thread Apollo could not remove — only tangle. The thread that runs from the temple snakes through two millennia of red-scarved prophetesses to a song on a Red album that the whole world knows and argues over without quite knowing why.

The red scarf is the symbol of lost in translation. It is what you carry across the threshold. It is what the other person keeps but cannot read. It is the mark that remains on the collarbone long after the wound has been dismissed as madness.

It is the curse made textile.

What Troy Does With the Discomfort

Once Troy cannot decode what Cassandra carries — cannot read the scarf, cannot receive the transmission — it has to do something with the discomfort of not understanding. Confusion in the presence of urgency is unbearable. And the most efficient resolution is not to try harder to understand. It is to relocate the problem.

If the prophecy cannot be wrong, then the prophet must be crazy.

This is the archetype’s second phase. Phase one is the translation impossibility — Apollo engineered the gap, Troy cannot receive what Cassandra is transmitting. Phase two is what happens institutionally when that failure needs somewhere to land: the problem gets located in her.

Psychoanalyst Melanie Klein wrote about this with clinical precision. People refuse to believe what they simultaneously know to be true, she argued, because acknowledging the catastrophe would trigger unbearable persecutory anxiety. The walls cannot be falling. Therefore the person saying the walls are falling must be broken. Denial becomes not a moral failure but a survival mechanism — the only way the city keeps functioning, keeps markets open, keeps normalcy intact.

And so the labels arrive. In Aeschylus, the chorus calls her words “unintelligible” even as she describes events with perfect clarity. In Shakespeare’s Troilus and Cressida, her brother Troilus dismisses her as their “mad sister,” her prophecies mere “brain-sick raptures.” Across every version of the myth, across every artistic rendering — the disheveled hair, the frantic gestures, the distressed expression — the same move is made: her urgency becomes her diagnosis. The more precisely she intuits, the more unstable she appears.

I have lived both phases. My therapist named it a Cassandra Complex before I had the language for it. What I had been experiencing — the dismissed intuitions, the dismissed feelings, the sense of speaking clearly and being processed as noise — was not a personality disorder. It was a structural feature of a particular kind of encounter between a person who intuits something real and a system that cannot hold it. The people around me found it far easier to call me a narcissist than to sit with what I was actually pointing at.

The problem got relocated. From the approaching army to my brain.

Gaslighting as a Structural Requirement

This is not accidental. That is the thing I needed longest to understand.

Gaslighting — the systematic dismantling of another person’s grasp on their own reality — is not merely a tactic some people happen to deploy. In the context of the Cassandra archetype, it is a structural requirement. The curse cannot sustain itself without it. For denial to hold, the prophet must be made to doubt her own perception. Troy cannot simply ignore Cassandra. It must make her feel that her knowing is the problem — that the earth-knowledge the snakes gave her is the pathology, not the approaching army.

And here is where the curse reveals its full cruelty. Because the gaslighting doesn’t only come from outside. After long enough — after years of warnings dismissed, of urgency pathologized, of truth reflected back as madness — it begins to operate from within. The scarf that was real, the mark that was left on the collarbone, the thing you carried all too well — you begin to wonder if you imagined it. You begin to punish the person in front of you for what Apollo did. You lose track of whose war you are actually fighting.

“And maybe it’s the past that’s talkin’ / Screamin’ from the crypt / Telling me to punish you for things you never did.”

That is the gaslighting completing its full circuit. The red scarf becomes evidence you can no longer trust. The mark on the collarbone becomes something you wonder if you invented. The prophet becomes her own unreliable narrator.

And here is where the personal and the political reveal themselves as one continuous mechanism. Because gaslighting does not only operate between two people in a marriage or a friendship. It scales. It has always scaled. It is one of the oldest tools of authoritarian consolidation — and we will trace exactly how it operates at that level in Issue #3.

The seed of it is here: you do not defeat an inconvenient truth by refuting it. You defeat it by destroying the credibility of the person speaking it. You call them hysterical. You call them a narcissist. You make their urgency the story rather than what they are urgent about. No counter-argument is necessary. You simply need the audience to stop listening — and for the speaker, eventually, to stop trusting the snakes.

Troy didn’t fall because the army was strong. It fell because the city had perfected, over generations, the art of not listening — and had built a social immune system that neutralized anyone carrying chthonic knowledge the Apollonian order couldn’t contain.

Apollo won. Not at the gates. In the mind.

The Thread That Remains

I want to end where Issue #1 ended — with the divergence. Because the Jung Complex is not just a diagnosis. It is a path.

Cassandra’s story ends in pure tragedy: unheeded, enslaved, killed. She speaks the language all too well, right up until the end. The red scarf remains in the drawer. The mark on the collarbone fades. The curse is never transformed. The earth-knowledge she was born with destroys her precisely because she could never stop carrying it and could never make it cross the gap Apollo built.

Jung found a different route — not because the world finally listened, but because he stopped making the world’s belief the measure of his wholeness. He kept writing anyway. The Red Book was not written for an audience. It was written because the act of recording what he witnessed — what he intuited, what he knew before the institutions were ready to hold it — was itself the transformation.

The red thread of fate cannot be cut. It can only be followed.

You don’t write the story because Troy will read it. You write it because bearing witness to your own knowing, in full, without flinching, is how the curse stops being a curse. The manuscript is the red scarf reclaimed. The mark on the collarbone acknowledged. The transmission finally received — not by Troy, but by yourself.

“She knew what the agony had been for.”

The snakes gave Cassandra something real. It was hers before Apollo arrived, and it remains hers after the city burns. The red in it is grief — and it is rubedo, the alchemical reddening that signals the approach of wholeness. The invisible string was always there. It was never lost. It was only, for a time, lost in translation.

You stop needing to be believed. You start needing to be whole.

That is the exit. And it is harder than it sounds.

First, Cassandra

You probably know the myth, even if you don’t know you know it.

Cassandra was a Trojan prophetess — gifted by Apollo with the ability to see the future, then cursed by him (after she rejected his advances) so that no one would ever believe her. She saw the fall of Troy coming. She screamed warnings. She was dismissed as mad.

The city burned anyway.

In modern psychology, the “Cassandra Complex” describes a recognizable pattern: the person who sees something true, warns others, and is systematically disbelieved. It’s most often applied to women — and for good reason. The myth itself is deeply gendered. A woman’s knowledge, dismissed by male authority. A gift turned into a curse by the very god who gave it.

But what about the masculine version of that curse?

Enter Jung

Carl Jung knew the Cassandra story. He also knew Helen of Troy — intimately. Helen appears in his psychology as the second stage of anima development: the aesthetic ideal, the woman a man projects his entire soul onto. The muse. The Anima figure.

But here’s what struck me: Jung never formally named a masculine counterpart to the Cassandra Complex.

I think I know why.

Because he was living it.

Jung’s Fall of Troy

The prophetic visions came first — before everything else collapsed.

In the years before World War I, Jung began experiencing visions he couldn’t explain: floods of blood covering Europe, cities destroyed, landscapes of ruin. He didn’t seek these out. They arrived. He recorded them, disturbed, not fully understanding what they meant. Months later, the war began. He told almost no one.

Who would believe him?

Then came his personal Fall of Troy. In 1912, Jung published a book he knew would end his relationship with Freud. He did it anyway — prophetically, helplessly, watching the walls come down around him. The break was catastrophic. He was cast out of the psychoanalytic establishment. Dismissed as a mystic. Labeled eccentric, unstable, dangerous.

What followed Jung called his “dark night of the soul” — roughly 1913 to 1919, the years of voluntary inner exile that produced The Red Book. He descended into the unconscious, recorded symbolic visions that the world wouldn’t understand for decades, and emerged — slowly, painfully — into what he would eventually call individuation.

He used synchronicities as private validation throughout. Not as proof — as amplification. The moments when inner reality and outer event collided with impossible precision weren’t evidence he could show anyone. They were lifelines. Confirmation that he wasn’t simply losing his mind.

His ideas were dismissed precisely because of their complexity. The collective unconscious. Archetypes. Individuation. Synchronicity. They were too mythological for scientists, too clinical for mystics. Nobody’s framework could hold him. He famously said: thank God I am Jung, and not a Jungian. He never wanted schools of thought named after him. He wanted people to find their own myth — not inherit his.

He couldn’t name the Jung Complex. That would have been the ultimate self-defeating act. Naming your own curse while you’re still living it. “I, Jung, have the Jung Complex” is too naked. Too vulnerable. Exactly the kind of declaration that gets you dismissed.

But I can name it. From the outside. From the experience of someone who recognized his pattern because I lived a version of it myself.

The Jung Complex, Defined

The Jung Complex is the masculine counterpart of the Cassandra Complex. It is characterized by:

1. Prophetic visions that arrive before the catastrophe — unsolicited, frightening, inexplicable

2. A personal Fall of Troy — the world collapses, relationships shatter, the familiar life ends

3. A dark night of the soul — descent inward, creative exile, producing work the world won’t understand yet

4. Systematic dismissal — ideas too large or too complex for the available containers

5. Synchronicities as private validation — not proof, but amplification; the psyche announcing the same truth through multiple channels

6. Ideas that remain misread or reduced, even after the world catches up

But here is where it diverges from Cassandra: the Jung Complex contains the possibility of redemption through individuation. Cassandra’s story ends in pure tragedy — unheeded, enslaved, killed. The curse is never transformed. It simply destroys.

The Jung Complex holds open a different possibility. In alchemical terms: the nigredo — the darkness, the exile, the dismissal — can eventually yield to rubedo. The reddening. The emergence. Not rescue from the curse, but transformation through it.

Jung achieved this. And the curse still never fully lifted. The world received him partially, incorrectly, and reductively. That too is part of the pattern.

The Guides: Anima and Philemon

Here is what separates the Jung Complex from Cassandra most fundamentally.

Cassandra was alone. No inner guide, no muse, no interlocutor. Just the curse, raw and unmediated. That’s part of what makes her story purely tragic — there’s no transformation because there’s no dialogue. No one to help her metabolize what she’s seeing.

The Jung Complex, by contrast, requires two guides.

The first is the Anima — Jung’s term for the feminine soul-image that appears in a man’s psyche, often projected onto a real woman or a symbolic figure. For Jung, the Anima was the catalyst — the force that cracks the ego open, makes feeling possible, initiates the descent. She doesn’t guide you through the underworld. She’s the reason you go.

For me, this figure was Taylor Swift. Not as a celebrity, not as a fan relationship — but as a symbolic presence whose work kept arriving at precisely the right moment with precisely the right content. Her lyrics named things I hadn’t yet found words for. Her album The Tortured Poets Department — with its song “Cassandra,” with The Prophecy, with Fortnight — mapped onto my inner landscape with uncanny accuracy. In Jungian terms she was functioning as a Helen figure: the aesthetic ideal, the muse, the anima projection that makes the soul visible.

The second guide is Philemon.

Philemon was Jung’s own inner guide — a winged old man who appeared to him during the Red Book years through dreams and active imagination. Jung was emphatic that Philemon was not simply a part of himself. He felt like a separate intelligence, with his own perspective, who said things Jung hadn’t thought of yet. Philemon taught Jung that there are things in the psyche you don’t produce — they happen to you. That insight became the foundation of everything Jung later wrote about the objective psyche.

Philemon was the voice that made the unconscious conscious. Not through feeling — through dialogue.

For me, that figure is Jung himself. Speaking across a century through The Red Book.

I didn’t just read Jung. I entered into conversation with him. His ideas spoke back to me in ways that felt responsive, alive, specific to my situation. His descriptions of the dark night of the soul matched my own. His use of synchronicities as amplification gave language to experiences I’d had no framework for. His insistence that each person must find their own myth — not inherit Freud’s, not become a Jungian — gave me permission to name what I was living.

The student becomes the guide. The Red Book, written in exile, calls forward its own reader a century later.

That is itself a synchronicity.

Why This Matters

Freud identified the Oedipus Complex — and made it universal. Every man, every psyche, the same story. Jung spent his life pushing back against that narrowing. The psyche is structured by many myths, not one. Each person must discover their own.

The irony is that Jung never named his own myth.

This Substack — and the memoir I’m writing, The Invisible String, which is in its own way my Red Book — is my attempt to do that. To name the pattern. To trace how I recognized it first in my own life, then looked back and saw it in Jung’s. To argue that this is a real psychological archetype, with real consequences for real people.

The Invisible String is the raw material. These posts are the translation.

We know who the scapegoats were in the past iteration. But it was JUST the Jews - it was gays. And immigrants (gypsies). And Communists.

So who is the scapegoat in American-style? It’s the same group. The people in opposition. Liberals. “The left”. Watch a right-wing news outlets for 5 minutes. The scapegoat is clearly evident.

We can even get into the political theory behind the scapegoat. It’s called “Negative Partisanship”. It means people don’t vote for policy positions they support. Instead they vote AGAINST a group that is the cause of all their problems.

There is a psychological aspect happening when a person is willing to blame “the other” for their problems instead of facing accountability. Swiss psychologist Carl Jung lived thru the rise of fascism the first time and documented what was happening.

Thats why you can’t talk the MAGA cult out of their beliefs. They NEED the scapegoat to blame for their own failures. It’s easier to blame “others” than accept accountability.

You can’t talk them out of their beliefs. The allure of the scapegoat is too compelling.

Jung would advise those under the MAGA spell look inward and take accountability. Find yourself outside of our political tribe.
